Classes are free and open to all Williamson County Public Library card-holders in good standing. Register by phone @ 595-1243 - no voice mails accepted - or stop by the Reference Desk. Participants must know how to use a keyboard and mouse prior to attending Intro to the Computer. Participants must have computer skills prior to attending all other classes. Computer skills include being able to use a mouse and keyboard; knowing how to open and close a program; knowing how to find and use menus and scroll bars.

Registration begins Monday, Mar. 21 at 9:00 am for the following classes. Call 595-1243 or stop by the Reference desk to register. No voice mails accepted. Classes run 4:00–6:00 pm.

Specific computer classes offered include:

Introduction to Yahoo! Email Introduction to email – featuring Yahoo! Learn how to create and manage a Yahoo! email account. You must either have or want to get a Yahoo Email account for this class to be useful to you. **For assistance with other email service providers, please call to schedule a one-on-one appointment.
Introduction to Digital Photography: What's the difference between film & digital? How to get pictures from the camera to the computer & editing pictures using Picasa's free online services.
Introduction to the Computer: Learn the basics of using your computer to surf the Internet in a fun class! This class is for persons with limited experience and use of computers. Participants will learn the basic components of the computer and the Windows operating system.
Introduction to the Internet: Confused about getting started on the Information Highway? Tangled in the World Wide Web? Learn about the Internet and take the first step into cyberspace @ your library! Participants will learn about and gain a basic understanding of:the function and structure of the Internet and the World Wide Web, search engines and strategies, Internet terminology, hyperlinks and how they make the web possible, ways to connect to the Internet, simple searching, and how to locate interesting and useful websites. *Prerequisites:"Introduction to the Computer" or the equivalent skills.
Introduction to Twitter: Learn about Twitter, its components, and how to create and manage your own account. Step-by-step account creation included in this class. If you want a Twitter account, this class will be beneficial to you.
Microsoft Word Basics: This class is for people with limited experience using word processing software.  Participants will learn the basic MS Word tools, how to type a paper or letter using Word, how to save documents to a disc, basic formatting commands including setting margins, selecting and modifying text, cutting and pasting text, and how to open and save documents. Participants will also learn multiple ways of completing particular tasks using MS Word. This is not a typing or keyboarding class.  *Prerequisites:  "Introduction to the Computer" or the equivalent skills.
Intermediate Microsoft Word: This class is for people with some experience using word processing software. Participants will learn how to insert clip art, create lists, make columns, format paragraphs and draw tables. This is not a typing or keyboarding class. *Prerequisites:  "Introduction to the Computer" or the equivalent skills.
Introduction to Facebook Pages: Why set up a page, how to set it up, promotion, posting, applications, etiquette, & measurement.
Introduction to Microsoft Excel: This class will show participants how to recognize and create a basic spreadsheet; basic formatting (alignment, numbers, font style and size); sorting your spreadsheet; printing and saving your work. *Prerequisites: "Introduction to the Computer" or equivalent skills; experience with Microsoft Word is preferred.
Intermediate Microsoft Excel: This class is for participants with some experience with basic spreadsheets. *Prerequisites: "Introduction to the Computer" or equivalent skills; "Introduction to MS Excel" or equivalent skills; experience with Microsoft Word is preferred.
My Library Account: Learn how to make better use of your library account: how to reserve books, search for books, how to keep a list of books you've read, and receive email notifications about new books.
Introduction to Microsoft PowerPoint: This class will show participants how to create a PowerPoint slide show, how to change the slide background and colors and how to add clip art and sounds to their presentations.*Prerequisites: "Introduction to the Computer" or equivalent skills, experience with Microsoft Word is preferred.
Introduction to Online Searching: How to search the Internet and World Wide Web using search tools, browsers, and other tips for getting the best search results possible. Prerequisites: Introduction to the Computer or equivalent skills*
Introduction to Facebook Profile:This class covers networking, privacy settings, creating an avatar & setting up a profile, navigation, applications & status updates.

Individualized Computer Tutoring

In addition, the Main Library offers individualized computer instruction. In these 30-minute one-on-one tutorial sessions, a library staff member will offer computer assistance customized to fit your needs. This service is ideal for learning how to create an email account, managing and maximizing your library account, learning to use electronic library resources, or refreshing your Microsoft Office skills. Preparation for Computer Classes

Participants need to be familiar with the keyboard, have some experience using the mouse, know how to open and close a program, and how to find and use the menu and scroll bars.   A mouse tutorial is available for public use at the library.  In addition, there are several websites available that offer instruction on the use of a mouse and keyboard.

There are also several good basic hands-on computer literacy websites.  If you would like to work through and practice some computer basics before attending one of our classes, try Jan's Illustrated Computer Literacy 101.  This is an illustrated computer literacy course, including Computer Basics, Working with Windows, Working with Words (word processing), Working with Numbers (spreadsheets), Working with the Web (Browser Basics & HTML Basics).   If you would like to familiarize yourself with basic computer and windows terminology before trying one of these tutorials or before attending one of our classes, this author has prepared a very helpful Glossary of alphabetically arranged computer terms and phrases.  If you don't see the word or phrase that you are looking for, use your browser's "Find" command to search for it within this glossary.

In addition, these tutorials are also available in Spanish by clicking on the word "Español" in the top right corner of the first page of each lesson.  If the Spanish text does not immediately appear or if your receive an page error, click on the "Refresh" button located in the horizontal toolbar at the top of your screen.
