Computer classes are now being offered at the Williamson County Public Library.  Classes meet in the computer lab (2nd floor).   Each class is offered for one week and each session lasts approximately 90 minutes. Registrations are made for only one session of each class. Classes are limited to not more than ten attendees and no less than five.  An alternate list with five names is made for each class.  Cancellations should be made at least 24 hours in advance to allow staff adequate time to fill vacancies from the alternate list.

Registration for the classes listed below will open on Monday, May 5, and close on Monday, May 19.   No registrations will be taken before the posted registration date.  Registrations are only accepted in person or by telephone, 595-1243, during normal library hours.  No email or voicemail registrations are accepted.

Classes listed below will be held on Tuesday mornings from 10:00 to 11:30 am in the Computer Lab at the Main library in Franklin

Your Electronic Library

Also available at the Main Library are classes featuring your "Electronic Library." Every third Tuesday of the month, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., the Reference Department offers tutorials on the use of your online library account and WCPL's two eBook and digital audio book databases, R.E.A.D.S. and NetLibrary.
Registration for each class is required and can be done by contacting the Reference Department at 615-595-1243 anytime during the month of the desired tutorial.

Preparation:

Participants need to be familiar with the keyboard, have some experience using the mouse, know how to open and close a program, and how to find and use the menu and scroll bars.   A mouse tutorial is available for public use at the library.  In addition, there are several websites available that offer instruction on the use of a mouse and keyboard.

There are also several good basic hands-on computer literacy websites.  If you would like to work through and practice some computer basics before attending one of our classes, try Jan's Illustrated Computer Literacy 101.  This is an illustrated computer literacy course, including Computer Basics, Working with Windows, Working with Words (word processing), Working with Numbers (spreadsheets), Working with the Web (Browser Basics & HTML Basics).   If you would like to familiarize yourself with basic computer and windows terminology before trying one of these tutorials or before attending one of our classes, this author has prepared a very helpful Glossary of alphabetically arranged computer terms and phrases.  If you don't see the word or phrase that you are looking for, use your browser's "Find" command to search for it within this glossary.

In addition, these tutorials are also available in Spanish by clicking on the word "Español" in the top right corner of the first page of each lesson.  If the Spanish text does not immediately appear or if your receive an page error, click on the "Refresh" button located in the horizontal toolbar at the top of your screen.
 

Introduction to the Computer

Learn the basics of using your computer in a fun class! This class is for persons with limited experience and use of computers. Participants will learn: the basic components of a computer, the parts of the Windows operating system, computer terminology, how to use a disk drive, how to start and close a program, and how to save to a disk.

Introduction to the Internet


Confused about
getting started on the Information Highway?  Tangled in the World Wide Web? Learn about the Internet and take the first step into cyberspace @ your library!  Participants will learn about and gain a basic understanding of:  the function and structure of the Internet and the World Wide Web, search engines and strategies, Internet terminology, hyperlinks and how they make the web possible, ways to connect to the Internet, simple searching, and how to locate interesting and useful websites.  *Prerequisites:  "Introduction to the Computer" or the equivalent skills.

Searching the Internet


This class will show you how to get better search results, teach you about different search engines and show you how to tell if a source is trustworthy.   Prerequisites:  Introduction to the computer AND Introduction to the Internet or equivalent skills*

Introduction to Yahoo! E-mail

This class focuses on the use of e-mail with particular attention paid to free world-wide web based e-mail.   Participants will learn to compose, send, read, forward, and delete messages; how to set up folders and use the address book feature, and will learn e-mail terminology and etiquette.   Even though the class uses Yahoo! mail, the information can be applied to other e-mail programs.  *Prerequisites:  "Introduction to the Computer" or the equivalent skills and "Introduction to the Internet" or the equivalent skills.  Note:  Participants will need to visit the library before the class and set up a Yahoo! E-mail account in order to do the class exercises.

Microsoft Word™ Basics

This class is for people with limited experience using word processing software.  Participants will learn the basic MS Word tools, how to type a paper or letter using Word, how to save documents to a disk, basic formatting commands including setting margins, selecting and modifying text, cutting and pasting text, and how to open and save documents. Participants will also learn multiple ways of completing particular tasks using MS Word. This is not a typing or keyboarding class.  *Prerequisites:  "Introduction to the Computer" or the equivalent skills.

Intermediate Microsoft Word™ 

This class is for people with some experience using word processing software.  Participants will learn how to insert clip art, create lists, make columns, format paragraphs and draw tables. This is not a typing or keyboarding class.  *Prerequisites:  "Introduction to the Computer" or the equivalent skills.

IIntroduction to Microsoft Excel

This class will show participants how to recognize and create a basic spreadsheet; basic formatting (alignment, numbers, font style and size); sorting your spreadsheet; printing and saving your work.  *Prerequisites: "Introduction to the Computer" or equivalent skills; experience with Microsoft Word is preferred.

IIntroduction to PowerPoint

This class will show participants how to create a PowerPoint slide show, how to change the slide background and colors and how to add clip art and sounds to their presentations.  *Prerequisites: "Introduction to the Computer" or equivalent skills, experience with Microsoft Word is preferred.
