Every Child Ready to Read®

The Main Library at Franklin has an exciting new workshop series designed to help get “Every Child Ready To Read®” Current research shows that children who learn six critical pre-reading skills before they start kindergarten become better readers. Children who do not know these skills when they come to school have a much more difficult time learning to read.

Parents and childcare providers can learn about the six skills and how to develop them in children from birth to age five @ your library. Each of the “Every Child Ready To Read®” programs explains why the skills are so important to learning to read, demonstrates how to help children learn the skills, provides titles of high-interest books that are age appropriate, and sends you home with early literacy activities to incorporate into your family’s daily routine.

The next time you visit the Main Library, be sure to pick up a schedule of upcoming programs, as well as one of the “Every Child Ready To Read®” Parent Guides with information about the six pre-reading skills that are prerequisites for learning to read and about suggested literacy activities for you and your child.

All branches of the Williamson County Public Library (Franklin, Bethesda, College Grove, Fairview, Leiper’s Fork and Nolensville) have books, videos and DVDs, story times and other resources to help parents learn more about early literacy and understand what and how to read to infants, toddlers and preschoolers. The more often children are read to by parents, the more chances children will have to develop the six critical pre-reading skills and to grow into fluent readers and eager learners. Visit a library soon to check out books and materials that will help your children get ready to read or call the Main Library’s Children’s Department at 595-1244 to learn more about programming and materials.
