Art: Up Close & Personal with Don Stewart

QuackMed drawing by Don Stewart

Visual humorist Don Stewart, owner of DS Art Studio Gallery in Birmingham, Ala., will sketch out his personal journey in art during the free educational program Art: Up Close & Personal on Monday, September 13, 2010, from 6 to 7:30 pm at the Williamson County Public Library. For the past 25 years, Stewart has been "hammering words and pictures together" in his preferred medium—the ballpoint pen. This holdover from his academic past accounts for the crisp detail in his whimsical drawings. Stewart emphasizes, "Ballpoint lines bring out tones and textures unattainable with conventional pen and ink; the black and white renderings come alive with hidden images and visual puns." Stewart outlines his approach to his art, "Comic art, trompe l'oeil and surrealism have existed in various forms since the times of the cave painters; puzzle pictures and visual puns have appeared throughout history at every level of expression from graffiti to high art. My goal is to bring this form of visual entertainment into a modern context, where words and images relate directly to the viewer and offer a happy return on their investment of time and attention."
The Art: Up Close & Personal series is jointly sponsored by the Arts Council of Williamson County, Williamson County Public Library and O'More College of Design. The series was developed to educate students in the arts as well as those in the community who have an interest in the arts. The lecture series is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
